Artificial intelligence in the service of border control in the EU

In this blog post, the author examines the use of artificial intelligence in border control. The analysis links interoperable databases with AI, highlights the inadequate protection of migrants’ rights under the Law on Artificial Intelligence, and explores the role of supranational agencies in deploying AI systems for border control.

Zorančo Vasilkov is an assistant professor employed at the Faculty of Business and Law at the
University MB in Belgrade. He received his master's degree from the Faculty of Law of the
University of Belgrade, and his doctorate from the Faculty of Law of the University of Niš. His
areas of scientific research are international law, EU law, security law and environmental law.
The current research focus is on the possibilities and consequences of applying AI systems in the fields of law and security. Until 2019, when he joined the academic community, he was professionally engaged as a law enforcement officer in the Gendarmerie and Border Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia. During that period, he participated in scientific and professional training, devoting a good part of his work to attempts to connect scientific knowledge and professional practice, among which stand out: "Management course for participation in UN peace operations" held at the Italian Carabinieri Training Center in Vicenza, "Joint European Cross-Border Cooperation", held at the Department of Criminology, Faculty of Sociology, University of Malta and "Programme for Terrorism and Security Studies" held at the European Center for Security Studies George Marshall, Garmisch-Partenkirchen Germany.
