La detenzione amministrativa in Italia ha subito delle variazioni significative nel corso del tempo, sia in
relazione alla capacità del sistema sia nel numero delle persone trattenute annualmente. Il tasso di
espulsione a livello nazionale, invece, ha mostrato una certa stabilità, non superando mai il 50 per cento
sul totale delle persone trattenute. Tuttavia, i dati raccolti dal 2018 dimostrano che il tasso di espulsione
non è omogeneo, ma varia da centro a centro. Anche i tempi medi del trattenimento mostrano differenze
notevoli a seconda dei CPR. La combinazione tra questi due indicatori caratterizza alcuni centri come
effettivamente funzionali alla finalità espulsiva e altri maggiormente orientati al trattenimento fine a se
stesso.

Immigration detention in Italy has varied greatly since 1998. The changes relate both to the capacity of
the system and the number of people detained yearly. However, the deportation rate has remained more
or less stable in the years: no more than the 50 per cent of the people detained in CPRs are eventually
deported. However, based on data collected since 2018, the deportation rate varies depending on the
CPR. Moreover, the average days spent in detention change from one centre to the other. The
combination of these two indicators reveals that some CPRs are aimed at actually deporting people,
while others are more inclined to detention without deportation.
